You 'can' join PERcY's Pick up Trash Friday!

Hi, Viper here! Are all you monkeys out there picking up trash that you see wherever you're going?! Lol you better be saying yes! xD

As you can see this a quick reminder for all monkeys on the Island and even the Staff! ^^ Today is Friday [in America], which means PERcY's Pick up Trash Day! Along with picking up trash, you can also recycle it instead of throwing it away in a garbage bin. :D

Something I do with my family, instead of throwing away cans, is to collect them up along with ones we see littered on the sidewalks and any places that cans & tins are not supposed to be. We put them in trash bags or grocery bags and after a period of time, we bring them to a Tin Recycling place and rid of them from the environment. Hehehe, a little benefit is that you get paid a specific amount, depending how many tins you give them. :P

Not only can you help our world and get rid of non-biodegradable objects but a tiny token is given back to your as a thanks, hehehe. :P

So maybe you monkeys could bring some kind of bag along with you, whenever you are taking a walk. You never know what could appear along the way like trash to recycle! ^.^

P.S. This Tuesday, after I wrote this, I finally had the chance to sell & recycle all the cans with my uncle and ended up getting $51.70 for 94 pounds of tin cans! :D Here are some pictures of the day :P

Hi there monkeys!

Well, since MiniMonos switched to beta the Top Banana card has changed a bit! Take a look at it :)

So, as you can see you need to Invite 5 friends, collect 100 clouds in the cloud catching game, recycle 150 items (this is my favorite game after the lagoon game) and finally help new fish appear at the lagoon!

Now, you will get a check here in about 2 to 3 days -- just keep playing the lagoon game!

How to edit the MiniMonos wiki

Hi Monkeys! Benoit here!

Panda and Catfish, our MiniMonos wiki curators, have done an awesome job running the MiniMonos wiki for over 3 weeks now! There is lots of great content on there -- and we'd love more content from all of you!

The MiniMonos wiki is a bit like a library, a place where everymonkey can contribute and store instructions, photos, stories and information for anyone else to come and read at any time. We are expecting lots more monkeys to be joining us over the coming weeks and months, and to help them out it would be great if they can use our MiniMonos wiki!

So if anymonkey is stuck on a game or wants to know how to become a Mini Mod, the MiniMonos wiki has the answers! It would also be great if the wiki is a place we could keep our important information, like who our adopted orangutan baby is!

Some monkeys have asked us to tell them about how to put cool stuff on the MiniMonos wiki - well I am here to help you out! Once you know the simple editing rules, adding your content to the wiki is easy.

Over the next 2 weeks I will be releasing 'How To' videos about the MiniMonos wiki and how we can all help to make it great.

If you've watched this video, tried hard, and still find it hard to post on the MiniMonos wiki, Panda has very kindly volunteered to upload your information for you. But if you can try to do it yourself first, that would be best! Panda's MiniMonos email address is panda(at)minimonos(dot)com.

Monkey of the Week -- Emini!

Our Monkey of the Week this week is Emini! Listen to this awesome story:

A few weeks ago in Emini’s country it was Seaweek so she and other volunteers went out collecting rubbish from the beach. And Emini did such a great job she was interviewed for her local newspaper!

Emini said that amongst other stuff, she picked up a heap of cigarette butts. These can be toxic as they break down and if there are a lot of them it can affect our wildlife. Check out all the cigarette butts they picked up -- there are about 1800 of them! Yuk!

Emini said in the newspaper interview: “Me and my friends have recently been aware of the environment. At lunchtime we just all go together and pick up the rubbish.”

Woohoo!!! We know that Emini and her friend, PurpleTanya, have been big supporters of PERcY’s Pick Up Trash Friday and have commented and tweeted about what they’ve been doing. Emini also told us that MiniMonos made her more aware of looking after the environment. That means that we monkeys are making a difference in the real world. How awesome is that!

Great job Emini and well done for being Monkey of the Week!

p.s. Wow! I just checked my messages and found out that Emini has a brand new baby brother! A huge congratulations again to you and your family, Emini! :-)

Lewisrae here, fresh from my party which was a big success!

On MiniMonos we rained loads of stuff! Andrea and AlphaMonkey rained bananas and we all rained easter eggs (we even went green when Andrea said "Go Green" lol!).

This Thursday MiniMonos is going into beta!

We're so excited about MiniMonos moving from alpha to beta on April 1st (US time)!

There will be gifts for everymonkey!

If you are a Top Banana Gold before April 1st, you will get an extra special rare item!

PLUS you will have the Go Bananas power at your treehouse! So if you're thinking about getting a Gold membership this week, make sure it's before Thursday to be able to rain bananas when people come to visit you.

Say hi to our new MiniMonos baby, Monti!

Isn't she so cute?

Monti was rescued by International Animal Rescue (IAR) and brought to the emergency rescue transit centre in Ketapang, West Kalimantan in Indonesia, last November.

An anonymous caller had contacted local forestry workers, saying that a family had found a young orangutan baby all alone in the jungle and had been taking care of her ever since. But the truth is quite different to this and far more horrible.

Someone had killed Monti's mother to get to her. An orangutan mother would never voluntarily give up her baby. A young orangutan baby can fetch up to $50 which is 2 months salary for a farmer. Then, if she survives, the criminal wildlife trader who has bought her for $50 could sell her for as much as $50,000 overseas!

Monti is still very small and needs an enormous amount of love and care -- just like a human baby! For now she's drinking lots of milk and sleeping a lot, which is normal for an orangutan her size. As she grows she will begin to explore and make new friends, such as Sigit, Malky and Bunga.

What would have happened to Monti if she had not been rescued by the IAR team? She could be dead....or worse: She might have become an illegal pet for a wealthy family in a big capital city of Indonesia. Or she may have been smuggled out of the country and forced to perform a humiliating show for tourists in some animal park in Thailand. Thankfully Monti was saved.

Monti's fate is now in a lot of people's hands -- Orangutan Outreach will do everything they can to work with IAR to make sure Monti has a future -- and that she will have a forest to go back to when she is ready to do so. I'm glad we are also helping her!

Below is a video of some other orangutans who Orangutan Outreach help. Kesi is in this video! I have just found out that Kesi is now 5 years old.

Because it was so hard to decide between Kesi and Monti, here's how we can manage to adopt Kesi too: From today, if we get 250 Gold memberships (of any length) we will also adopt Kesi for a year!

We're really glad we can help Monti have a better life now that she has been rescued.

MiniMonos is switching off for Earth Hour

At 8.30pm on 27 March 2010, people across the world will turn off their lights for one hour – Earth Hour. This is an easy way to save energy and if done by many many people all around the world it will make a big difference to our environment!

This year people will also be asked to think more about the earth in their everyday lives and make a pledge to start doing something bigger. At MiniMonos Island we know that many of you are already taking better care of the world around us.

So we thought you would understand why we think everyone should turn off their computers for an hour! Instead of playing online, you can maybe go kick a ball, climb a tree, fly a kite, play cards, play a board game, tell a story, look at the stars.....

How to get involved

You can take part by switching off all lights and appliances that are not super-important in your home at 8.30pm on Saturday March 27. That is, at 8.30pm your time, wherever you are!

The MiniMonos family of monkeys thought about what we could do – and have decided to turn off all the power on MiniMonos Island for an hour. Since most of our monkeys live in the USA, we decided that the most meaningful thing to do would be to turn off for an hour at 8.30pm PST.

Here's something everymonkey can do - take the time to go around your house now, and turn off appliances in the house that are not being used. You may not know that they still use power even when they are on standby! By turning them off at the wall you will save your family money, and reduce carbon emissions by reducing the need to generate more electricity.

You can create a virtual lantern here or make a real one!!! Here is mine!

Earth Hour is a message of hope and action. Imagine what we can achieve when we all act together!

We're getting a new baby!

Hey Everymonkey!

Remember how we said we'd adopt a baby orangutan for our whole MiniMonos community if we reached our First 50 Top Banana Gold memberships?

Well now is the time for us to choose who we want to adopt!

After doing some more research we have now decided to support Orangutan Outreach to adopt our baby, for the following reasons:

Orangutan Outreach support lots of orangutan adoption organizations so we can find out heaps from them about what is happening around the world with orangutan rescues
They like to keep the adoption process green by handling it all online. No paper, no envelopes, no cardboard adoption certificate. More money for the orangutans and less waste!
We will get updates about our adopted baby several times a year, with photos and maybe even a video!
Orangutan Outreach give lots of information about what we can do to help save rainforests. We want to talk with you more about that and what we can do!

So we have 2 gorgeous orangutan babies to choose from! Although our donation goes to the chosen orangutan we want to adopt, it also gets shared with other orangutans in the nursery or forest school she belongs to. We think that it's great that our donation is shared with our baby's adopted brothers and sisters!

Here are the 2 orangutans for us to decide on:

Monti

At only about 6 months old, Monti is the smallest orangutan of the dozen now living at the West Kalimantan rescue center in Ketapang, Indonesia. She was brought to the center after an anonymous caller contacted the local Ketapang forestry officers and told them some rural people had found her all alone in the jungle, but the truth is something different. She wasn't 'found' in the jungle. She was kidnapped!

Kesi

Kesi had her hand chopped off when plantation workers killed her mother with a machete. Now she is older, and the top pupil in Orangutan Forest School at Nyaru Menteng. Champion tree-climbing and nest-builder, Kesi is an excellent role model for newly arrived orphans.

So now it's time for us all to choose!

But they will cost a lot! Maybe up to 5000 banana chips! So, if I were you, I would be stacking up on the chips!
